Must Have: Patara Ancient City

Patara Ancient City, which can be reached directly from Kaş and Kalkan by minibus, is located in the Ovagelmiş Village between Kalkan and Demre. The ancient columns and the authentic atmosphere of the environment will be remembered for a long time.

Patara: The Changing Sands of an Ancient Lycian Civilization

Patara, with its natural harbor, was the main port of Lycia and one of the richest cities of the ancient world. It was known as the chosen city or metropolis of the Lycian nation. After surrendering to the forces of Alexander the Great, the city became an important naval base and a vital income for the Macedonian kingdom. The city has passed through the hands of numerous civilizations, including the Romans and Byzantines.

In the middle of the seventh century, plunder and piracy saw the collapse of the Lycian empire. Patara held on but was eventually reduced to a small harbor protected by walls. By the 15th century, Patara was abandoned. Patara, with its natural harbor, was the main port of Lycia and one of the richest cities of the ancient world. Exploring the Ruins

The ruins in Patara are some of the most atmospheric ruins in Turkey. Although there is much to explore, much of the city is very rumored… It is buried under the changing sands, including the Temple of Apollo. Excavations continue, archaeologists patiently sifting through years of accumulated sand to uncover remains from the past.

However, there is still much to see. A little east of the Xanthus river, head to the seaside and look out for:

stone vaulted parliament building

A monumental triumphal arch

baths

columned streets

a lighthouse believed to be the oldest in the world

A ruined temple and theater on the hillside

City walls with exposed stone sarcophagi

several towers

Temples, altars, pedestals, and statue fragments

The entrance fee to the ruins can change every year. It is worth wandering around these areas. We recommend visiting in the late afternoon when the ancient stone is infused with a golden glow and long shadows add mystery to the ruins.

How to get to Patara Beach?

There are regular bus services between Fethiye and Antalya. Be sure to ask your driver if he will stop in Patara. Some buses are express services.

From the bus stop, you can take a local minibus into town or walk.

The idyllic coastline is simply incredible if you can distance yourself from your private pool. Patara Beach is right on your doorstep with 20 kilometers of white sand. Patara, which is also home to the ancient city of the same name and a quaint little village, should be on everyone's to-do list.

The Kas peninsula is ideal for a great excursion (and sailing enthusiasts can moor their boats to the Kas marina). You can register to go on blue cruise and sailing tours or to go to Turkey's best diving spots. Kaputaş beach, one of the most photographed beaches in Turkey, is also popular with locals and vacationers. By the way, if your sense of fun is not just the sea, but the sun, you can check out the beach clubs in the Kalamar district. It is home to top-notch restaurants for food and drink, as well as sunbed and umbrella rentals.

The Magnificent Xanthos Ancient City

Xanthos is a mystical place where you can feel the presence of people still living while walking among the ancient ruins. According to legends, it is known to be the city of the Lycian King Sarpedon.

Kalkan

About the Kalkan…

Compared to other resorts with easy access to the airport, Kalkan has a more remote location. It takes about 1.5 hours to reach the town from Dalaman Airport. We do not know if the residents of Kalkan are satisfied with this situation… In the winter, the tourism season ends, but the hosts can still use Antalya Airport. It is located on the main D400 highway, which runs from east to west of Turkey and is easily accessible by car. If you are coming by bus, you can go to the central bus station in Antalya or Fethiye and get a transfer service from there. In the meantime, let's take a look at why the Shield's reputation is so sophisticated...

Kalkan, one of the most touristic areas of Kaş, is among the most ideal Kaş holiday destinations with its colorful air.

In addition, you can find many Kas villa rental options in the surrounding area, and you can crown your holiday with a comfortable stay accompanied by magnificent views.

Kalkan Conservative Villas, Luxury Villas and much more…

To understand Kalkan, consider the magnificent Mediterranean houses. The exquisite Kalkan villas feature large windows, large terraces, and bright living spaces to allow their residents to enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine. Privacy is paramount and conservative villas are in high demand thanks to their hidden privileged aspects: Private sheltered pools, hidden terraces, and large landscaped gardens. The best sites are a short walk from the cobbled streets of the old town. As we climb the hill (a tough hike even for the strongest among us), housing prices decrease. Of course, these slopes are no longer a problem when private transportation is provided.
